Weight Watchers Denver Meetings

Weight Watchers Denver Meetings

weight watchers diet

Verywell / Debbie Burkhoff

As one of the most popular diet plans over the last 50 years, Weight Watchers—or as it's currently named, WW—has certainly helped some people achieve weight loss success. On this plan, foods are assigned different SmartPoints values, and you're given a daily allowance of SmartPoints to eat. You'll need to track your food every day to ensure you stay within your target range to support your weight loss goals.

Weight Watchers has evolved many times since its inception, and the current plan does offer advantages compared to those of the past. Point values of foods are based on more than just calories, and the company has made a targeted effort to shift their focus from pounds shed to overall wellness. However, some people may still get caught up in focusing on numbers and restriction, rather than embracing healthy behaviors.

What Experts Say

"The WW diet assigns points to foods and exercise and requires a daily tally/balance of points. Many experts agree that this can lead to seeing exercise as a way to compensate for food and that tallying points, just like calories, could create a focus on numbers rather than health." – Willow Jarosh, MS, RD

Background

History of the Company

Weight Watchers started in the early 1960's. Founder Jean Nidetch invited a group of friends to her New York City home to discuss the best methods for losing weight. That small group meeting evolved into a core part of past and current Weight Watchers programs.

One of her early group participants, Al Lippert, encouraged Nidetch to incorporate Weight Watchers in 1963. Lippert helped Nidetch to do so, and the business expanded rapidly. They became quite wealthy when the company went public in 1968.

Weight Watchers was later sold to the H.J Heinz company – yes, the ketchup manufacturer – in 1978 for $71 million. Heinz later sold the business to a European investment firm in 1999, where it was put up again for public offering in 2001.

In 2018, the company shifted it's focus from weight to wellness, re-branding as WW International, Inc, with the tagline "Wellness that Works."

Evolution of the Diet Plan

While Weight Watchers is known for its point system today, the original 1960s program was a fairly simple list of restricted, limited, and unlimited foods. Most of the diet's principles were those Nidetch had picked up in a program at an obesity clinic at the NYC Department of Health.

The rules of the original program were far stricter than the current program. For example, if you were following Weight Watchers in the 1960s you'd need to...

  • Eat fish at least five times per week
  • Only eat eggs a few times a week, and only at breakfast
  • Eat 3-5 servings of permitted fruit each day, but avoid "forbidden fruits" (like bananas, watermelon, and cherries)
  • Keep some foods off-limits, like bacon, avocado, peanut butter, and yogurt

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, variations on this exchange style meal plan were adopted. It wasn't until 1997 that points were introduced, and that has evolved many times since. Here's a list of the different incarnations of points-based programs:

  • 1997 – 1-2-3 Success Program, the first points system which assigned values to foods based primarily on their caloric value
  • 2000 – Winning Points, a more individualized points system that did not have any food exclusions and included adjustments for physical activity
  • 2004 – Turnaround Program, which gave participants a choice of either the Core Program (a non-points based plan with a list of compliant vs. non-compliant foods) or The Flex Plan (a points plan that allowed eating anything as long as it was within the daily points allowance)
  • 2008 – Momentum Plan, a crossover between the Core and Flex plans that was point-based but emphasized a list of filling foods
  • 2010 – PointsPlus Plan, an overhaul of all the previous plans. This attempted to address the fact that although an apple and a handful of potato chips may have the same calories, they are not nutritionally equal. The new points system took into account factors like fat, protein, carbohydrates, and fiber.
  • 2015 – SmartPoints Plan, an update to PointsPlus that also emphasized exercise with FitPoints
  • 2017 – WW Freestyle, a plan that expands SmartPoints zero point foods (which don't need to be tracked) to include things like lean proteins. This is the plan currently used today.

How It Works

The current WW Freestyle plan is based on their SmartPoints system. Every food has an assigned number of points, and you'll receive a daily budget of SmartPoints to use throughout the day.

There is also a weekly cushion of extra SmartPoints which can be used to eat a little extra each day or can be allocated towards a special event that week that's point-heavy (like a friend's BBQ or a wedding).

There are no off-limit foods on WW, but the plan does encourage participants to eat nutritious options by steering you towards zero point foods. There are more than 200 of these foods, meaning you can enjoy them without tracking or measuring. These include many fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins.

Weight Watchers offers three different tiers of membership to help you assess and track your SmartPoints:

  • Digital Plan – Includes use of the WW app to track food and activity, access to the community, and 24/7 online chat support
  • Workshop Plan – Includes everything in the digital plan, plus weekly group workshops with guidance from wellness coaches
  • Coaching Plan – Includes everything in the other two plans, plus access to one-on-one coaching support with unlimited phone calls

Pros and Cons

Weight Watchers is very appealing for many people looking to eat better since all foods can fit in the diet. It offers flexibility to enjoy meals at a special event or while eating out (provided it fits in your points allowance) and promotes many nutritious options in the zero points category. It's also been shown in research to support weight loss and tied to a reduction in diabetes risk among those with pre-diabetes.

However, there are also some downsides to the program. The focus on counting points can be cumbersome and feel restrictive for some people. It can also create an unhealthy mindset around food, encouraging people to skip meals so they can "save up" points for an unhealthy meal later. And though it's not expensive on a weekly basis, the cost can add up depending on how long you feel you need to stay on the program to reach your goals.

Common Myths and Questions

Even though Weight Watchers has been around many years, the continued evolution of the program has led to confusion about some parts of the diet.

Myth: Weight Watchers is a great way to lose weight quickly.

Fact: The goal of the program is slower, sustainable weight loss. It recommends losing no more than two pounds per week (after the first three weeks).

Myth: Once you hit your weight loss goal, you no longer need to follow the diet.

Fact: Many people fall into the cycle of losing weight on the program, then "going off" the program, and gaining it back. Unfortunately, this is very common with any diet plan.

This doesn't mean you have to pay for Weight Watchers (or any other diet program) for life. But if you have a certain weight that you are striving to maintain, you'll need to stick with the core tenants of healthy eating and caloric balance for life. On the flip side, you can choose to let go of the focus on weight and simply enjoy a healthy relationship with nutritious foods.

Myth: You have to go to group meetings to be part of Weight Watchers.

Fact: Weight Watchers offers several tiers of membership, and one is a digital-only option. With this plan, you participate in the program on your own from the comfort of your home.

Myth: At Weight Watchers meetings, you have to weigh in publicly.

Fact: You do not. The meetings are not designed as a method of public humiliation but rather for accountability. Your weigh-ins are done in private with only the group facilitator, and then you'll be able to discuss tips for sticking with your goals in the larger group setting.

Myth: You have to eat pre-packaged frozen meals.

Fact: While there are frozen meals that are branded with SmartPoints values, you do not have to eat these. You can eat any food from the grocery store, restaurant, farmers market, etc. You only have to worry about staying within your points range.

Myth: Weight Watchers is only for women.

Fact: Though Weight Watchers has traditionally attracted female participants, both men and women are welcome to use the program.

How It Compares

Though there are some slight differences, Weight Watchers is very similar to the USDA recommendations for a healthy balanced diet. For example, the program emphasizes fruits and vegetables as zero-point foods—in line with how the USDA recommendations encourage you to make half your plate fruits and vegetables. Or, consider that foods which are less nutritious (for example, those with lots of added sugars and unhealthy fats) tend to be very high in SmartPoints. This discourages users from eating them regularly, similar to how USDA recommendations advise against frequent consumption.

One slight difference though—while the USDA gives guidance based on calories or servings, Weight Watchers uses its proprietary points system.

Weight Watchers also has some similarities to other popular diets but varies in its effectiveness and sustainability. Here's a quick overview of how it compares:

  • Jenny Craig – Some research has suggested Jenny Craig may lead to more weight loss than Weight Watchers. However, Jenny Craig relies on pre-packaged meals which may be unsustainable for long term compliance.
  • Nutrisystem – Like Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem is another packaged meal company. While it may be convenient, it lacks the lifestyle and meal preparation skills that are encouraged within the Weight Watchers program.
  • Low-Calorie Diet – Both Weight Watchers and a low-calorie diet require tracking food and can lead to weight loss. However, strict low-calorie diets tend to be far more restrictive than Weight Watchers.
  • Optavia Diet – The Optavia Diet ranks as the number two best diet for fast weight loss (tied with Atkins, keto, and Weight Watchers) due to lower caloric intake.

A Word From Verywell

If you're trying to lose weight, Weight Watchers can offer the structured support you may need. By tracking your food daily and weighing in weekly, you're encouraged to self-monitor and become aware of your choices. These skills can help you recognize problem areas and make healthier choices, leading to weight loss.

The plan is not for everyone though. For some people, constant tracking can lead to an unhealthy obsession with numbers. For others, the freedom to eat anything can almost feel paralyzing in their weight loss journey.

No matter what course of action you choose, remember that the best diet is the one you enjoy and that you can stick to for life.

What Do You Need to Know to Buy a Used Golf Cart?

These days, golf carts are more than just vehicles to transport you and your buddies to the next distant green on the fairway. Some models comfortably seat four adults, prompting families to use them as quick short-range transportation in communities that allow residents to drive golf carts on city streets. Even in towns with restrictions, many people use them on their own property to travel from one end to another and transport lightweight items.

In short, owning a golf cart can be both useful and fun far outside the boundaries of a golf course. If you're willing to buy a used golf cart, you can often save a great deal of money, but you need to learn what to look for and what to avoid to make sure your money is well spent. Start by considering these five factors when searching for the right used golf cart at a great price.

Decide if You Want an Electric or Gas Golf Cart

It sounds simple enough — plug it in or fill it up — but this decision isn't as easy as you might think. You need to consider the pros and cons of the two different types of golf carts before deciding. Gas-powered golf carts usually run at higher speeds than electric carts and have more power — 10 to 14 horsepower for most gas carts versus 4 to 6 horsepower for electric. Combine the greater power with a range of 100 to 180 miles for a gas cart with a 4 to 6 gallon tank, and gas carts are the clear winner when it comes to street driving. Electric carts average 15 to 25 miles per charge, depending on the battery capacity.

However, maintenance for a gas golf cart is similar to a gas-powered lawn mower or tractor and requires much more effort. An electric golf cart merely requires battery maintenance, which includes adding water periodically and keeping the battery cables clean. Electric golf carts are also much friendlier to the environment. They are generally an excellent choice for simple movement around your property and on golf courses unless the property isn't flat. With less power than gas golf carts, electric models don't perform as well on hills. Additionally, you may not realize the battery is almost dead on an electric cart, while a gas cart has a fuel gauge to ensure you aren't left stranded.

Pay Attention to the Condition of the Golf Cart

One of the most important factors to consider when buying a used vehicle — golf carts included — is the condition of the vehicle. Has the cart been fully refurbished with an engine or battery replacement, or are you buying it "as is" without any obligation on the seller's part to make repairs? If it's the latter, be sure to ask the seller pointed questions about any accidents or major mechanical problems the cart has experienced.

Examine the motor or the battery to check the condition, and inspect the seats, roof and tires to evaluate wear and tear. If you don't feel comfortable making these assessments yourself, take a mechanic or someone knowledgeable with you to help. If a used golf cart needs a new battery or extensive engine repairs, both of which are expensive, make sure the price you pay accounts for all the repairs you will need to make.

Consider Golf Cart Options from Different Brands

Although numerous manufacturers make golf carts, three top golf cart brands have stood the test of time: Club Car, Yamaha and EZ-GO. All three companies have a long history making and selling reputable products and represent the gold standard in golf carts. Each brand has its own vast array of accessories and customizations that could be included on used models, but other brands still have plenty to offer and shouldn't be ruled out.

Models from manufacturers like Cushman, Polaris, Hitachi and Garia have a lot to offer and provide years of enjoyment and satisfaction. Garia, in particular, bills itself as a provider of luxury golf "cars," which means used models could be equipped with premium features at discounted prices.

Think About the Features You Really Need

Any time you shop for anything, you want to think about the features you actually need as well as those you simply want. In most cases, golf carts with more features will be more expensive, but it's always possible to run across some real steals when you're shopping on the used market. Great bargains aside, the best course of action is figure out what you need and focus your attention on finding deals on golf carts with those characteristics.

Will you be frequently driving your golf cart on rough terrain? Look for a model with larger tires for extra cushioning and shock absorption. Will you use it to drive up and down hills? Look for a gas-powered model with plenty of power. If your budget allows for it, then you can look for features and customizations that simply enhance the cart's main purpose. After all, the more the cart fits your needs and desires, the more you will enjoy it.

Weigh the Pros and Cons of Buying from Dealerships and Private Sellers

As a general rule, dealerships will attempt to sell golf carts at higher prices than private sellers, but exceptions are common. For example, dealerships often slash prices when they want to get rid of inventory quickly, while private sellers may be determined to maximize their profits on their golf cart sales. Unfortunately, popular vehicle pricing guides like Kelley Blue Book and NADA don't provide any information on values for used golf carts. That means you will need to spend some time researching dealership listings and private ads on the internet and in newspapers to determine average prices in your area.

Photo Courtesy: Thomas Winz/The Image Bank/Getty Images

Be sure to take into account important details related to the age and condition of the golf cart. Dealers often refurbish golf carts before placing them on the sales floor, which dramatically impacts the value. They may also offer a warranty with your purchase and financing if you need it. The sales professionals can usually provide information about many different golf cart models and help you make comparisons.

If you have your eye on a particular golf cart, an individual seller may offer a lower price, but you will have to pay cash for the purchase, and won't be able to rely on financing unless you take out a private loan with your bank. The savings can be substantial, but it will also be up to you to make sure the condition of the golf cart matches the price you pay. If you don't have any mechanical knowledge of golf carts, take someone with you who does. No matter where you buy your used golf cart, be careful not to fall for claims and deals that are too good to be true.

10 Smart Ideas for Living Room Side Tables

Bring some function and style to your living space with this fresh new look at side tables

Looking for a side table for your living room? There are a number of options to choose from – you just need to decide whether you want to add a touch of interest, show off your scheme, maximise the space, or simply provide an extra surface when you need it. Check out these clever ideas to find a side table that suits your needs.

Grab some cube shelves
Some lateral thinking is always useful when it comes to designing a room. Here, a couple of cube shelves have been put to good use and stacked as a side table. The effect is more interesting than a usual table, and it allows for some flexibility. If another surface is needed, the top cube can be removed and placed elsewhere.

Put it on wheels
A drinks trolley makes an interesting alternative to the standard side table. This one adds a touch of vintage glamour to the space. The wheels are practical too and allow the table to be moved around as needed.

Revisit the nested table
Nested tables have had a revival lately. Here, they've been reinvented in a very modern way. The block design and tonal colours look stunning together, and there's no arguing with the practicality – three surfaces in one is a win-win.

Double it up as a seat
Create a soft look in your living room by using a padded stool as a table. If you're worried everything will fall off, place a tray on top to act as a hard surface. This one complements the tones in the sofa and cushions, and can double up as a handy footstool or seat.

Pop in some perspex
Stop your side table overshadowing other items in the room by opting for a perspex version. Bright colours and bold patterns dominate this space, so the transparent side table provides an unobtrusive surface in the background.

Got a small living room? See how to create a sense of space

Repurpose a dining table
No space for a permanent dining table? How about this clever idea? A drop-leaf table sits neatly in the corner and works as a unique side table and drinks storage. As soon as guests come round for dinner, it can be pulled out and transformed into a dining table.

Go back to nature
Bring an earthy feel into your living space by using a tree trunk as a side table. This one has been beautifully restored to form a smooth surface. It warms up the grey colour scheme and ties in with the exposed beams above.

Take the lid off
For a versatile surface, look out for a side table with a tray on top. This one is perfectly designed to slot over your lap, but the tray can also be removed for full TV-dinner indulgence. If you fancy one of these, hunt around as there are tray tables on the market to suit all budgets.

Make the most of radiator covers
In this pretty space, the radiator cover doubles up as a handy side table. If you've covered your own radiator, think about how you can arrange your seating to maximise its potential. Place an armchair beside it and a lamp on top to create a cosy, warm corner.

Curtain poles for Bays and Sunrooms made properly

We've made hundreds (maybe thousands) of superb quality, bespoke wrought iron bay window curtain poles for both angled and curved (bow) bay windows. As a result we have a wealth of experience, technical expertise and resources to make these using measurements supplied by the customer.

We also make curtain poles for sunrooms (timber or brick conservatory, orangery type extensions) and can make any size curtain pole from 25mm diameter tubing. Typically we have curtain poles 6m to 10m in length on the books at any one time. Ask for a quote.

"Hi Stephen, I just wanted to say that the pole arrived just before New Year but I didn't get time until yesterday to put it up. It was so straightforward to put up, looks so beautiful and the action is so smooth – I love it – thank you so much! That's many years of various bay window nightmares finally vanquished!!"

"Hi Stephen, Just a quick note to let you know that the pole is now fitted, and it looks fabulous. Emer asked that we send photos which are attached. Thanks for your hard work and precision. Regards, Bob"… (October 2021)

We'll make a better curtain pole…

Never bent to a drawing chalked on the workshop floor, these custom made bay window curtain poles are properly designed and validated  using AutoCAD. This way an exact fit is assured that runs level and parallel to the walls of the bay. The result is a quality, well engineered, beautiful bay window curtain pole. One that works as it should at the best possible price.

There's more to read down the page or Click on the nearest shape to your Bay window below for more specific information.

Measuring for your Bay window curtain pole…

C lick on the appropriate drawing above to select your bay window shape and follow the instructions for the required measurements.  There's a price calculator which will give you a very good idea of the cost too. Remember, these are just examples of the more common designs but we can make poles for just about any shape of bay with any number of bends.  We can also make curtain poles for ceiling fix too. Let us know if you have any particular requirements and we can let you know what measurements to take.

Please note: The 16mm bay window curtain poles have five brackets making them suitable for use with curtains using passing rings. This design would not be suitable for a single pair of Tab-Top or Eyelet curtains as they could not cross the intermediate passing brackets…

Sorry, we no longer make double bay poles for sensible money!

Do you want a Bay window curtain pole that just uses three brackets?

25mm Curved Bay pole using just three brackets (two wall, one ceiling). Uses standard double hoop rings.

We can make 25mm diameter bay window poles that only use three brackets instead of five. Also, these could be the answer if you'd rather use standard double hoop rings instead of passing rings with your curtains. The poles are supplied in two sections.

Extra large Bay windows?

Using 16mm Diameter solid bar:

The size of bay window poles made from 16mm diameter solid bar can be up to 5m along the walls. This is due to carriage limitations. Black, Petwer or Beeswax finishes.

Using 25mm Diameter Tube:

Bay window curtain poles made from 25mm diameter tubing can be built for any size Bay window.

Technically better…

We can make bay poles from either solid bar or tube, simple and complex, multi-angled, curved or combination. If you supply mm accurate measurements, we can supply a pole to fit within mm accuracy of those measurements. As fully qualified Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineers, not just Blacksmiths or Farriers, we know what we're doing.

Not everyone making bay window curtain poles has the skill to bend tubing which is much harder to shape than solid bar.

A CAD drawing is created for every bay window curtain pole

And better value…

It's basically down to efficient manufacturing techniques.  Whilst still hand-made, and we do use the hammer and anvil where necessary, we don't pretend to be using  out-dated, purely 17th century methods which would add absolutely nothing but huge cost and inaccuracy to the poles.

Every manufacturer that makes wrought iron bay curtain poles uses MIG or ARC welders in the process, as we do. We make things properly, carefully and efficiently with the benefit of years of production experience and are honest about our methods. Also, we don't spend a fortune (in fact, nothing!) on professional branding and marketing so there's none of those overheads to recover. Please do compare our prices and quality.

What to expect…(assuming we've been given the correct measurements, of course!)

  • The pole should keep the same offset around the bay and the distance from the walls should not vary.Variations in offsetare especially apparent in badly made curved bay curtain poles.
  • A bay window curtain pole should be flat without twisting out of plane between bends or along a curve.
  • Passing rings should not catch on the brackets or jump off the curtain pole if fitted properly to the curtains (see advice below).
  • The curtain pole should be properly supported and not sag at the corners. It should be stable and not twist when the curtains are moved along it.
  • The  bracket fixing plates should align properly.

Hanging curtains with Passing Rings

Let's face it, the now ubiquitous "Passing rings" are essentially to some degree, a compromise. The idea is to address the problem of preventing the (usually solid bar) pole from failing under the weight of the curtains by introducing "Passing" brackets to give the pole extra support. Unfortunately horror stories abound of rings jumping off poles or catching on brackets where some manufacturers haven't got it quite right with their Passing ring systems (including the copycats!). Having said that, our unique design works very well indeed and is proven over many years but to get the very best results there are still some provisos…

The curtain heading tape usually has three rows of pockets and strings. With curtain tracks , the hooks are inserted into the bottom or middle row of pockets so that the curtain heading hides the track. However, for curtain poles the hooks should be inserted into the top row of pockets so that the curtain hangs below the pole. This is especially important when using Passing rings.

Passing rings should be attached to the curtain hooks inserted in the top pockets of the curtain header tape so that the curtain hangs completely below the rings.

Each Passing ring should bear enough curtain weight to stay in contact with the pole…

  • Curtains using Passing rings should be hung clear of the floor.
  • Curtains should not be lifted when drawn.
  • Please make sure you space the rings accordingly.
  • We can also make 25mm bay poles that just use three brackets and standard double hoop rings too (see above).

Maintenance

Every 6 months or so, pewter and black bay window curtain poles can benefit from a quick wipe on top with a cloth lightly sprayed with a dry lubricant such as PTFE or silicone spray. Beeswax poles can be buffed lightly to avoid any dust build up, and a little plain furniture wax keeps the rings running smoothly.

Passing rings work best above the curtain

Available in two diameters…

Strong, elegant 16mm diameter solid bar

A bay window curtain pole formed from 16mm solid iron bar would usually use a five bracket passing ring system which ensures proper support so that the pole does not sag at the corners. Strong enough for any size bay, this allows closer bends and results in a  better, more elegant fit than can be achieved with larger diameters, especially for more complex bays. The refined look of the 16mm diameter poles is in constant demand and remains ever popular.

Curtain pole for bay window

Contemporary, chunky & rigid  25mm diameter tubing.

If you're looking for larger curtain poles we can also make 25 mm  bay curtain poles for both Angled and Curved bays. We use high quality thick wall tubing ( thicker quality than The Bradley Collection steel curtain poles).  Tubing is used as heavy solid bar over 16mm diameter could put excessive strain on wall and ceiling fixings. The heavier the pole, the more it will sag under it's own weight.

The 25mm poles are available in the same finishes as the 16mm range. These are very strong and rigid poles which can span a greater distance than solid bar without extra support, so are often more suitable for ringless curtains too.

Guaranteed to fit?

Of course!  If you've provided accurate wall measurements and all relevant information, it's no more than your entitlement that the pole fits properly.

How to plan and decorate your living room

A good starting point is to think about how many people you need to fit in your living room on a regular basis. This will help you to choose the right living room furniture.

What should I put in my living room?

A large family will need a sizeable sofa and a couple of armchairs at least to make sure everyone has somewhere comfortable to sit.

If space is tight, beanbags and poufs are a smart way to sneak in extra seating, and can be stowed away easily at times when there are fewer people in the house.

If you like to entertain in your living room, it's a good idea to have a few lightweight side chairs that can be moved into more sociable arrangements when people come to visit. Small side tables or nesting tables are another handy addition, giving guests a place to perch their drinks.

How do you set up living room furniture?

This depends on the size of your living room and what the room is most commonly used for. Small living rooms may require you to place furniture against the walls to ensure there's enough space for people to move about without sidling around chairs or banging their shins on the coffee table.

Ideally you need at least 50cm between each piece of furniture to allow for optimum traffic flow.

If you have a bit more space to play with, bring the furniture away from the walls to create a cosy sitting area. This works especially well in open-plan living spaces, helping to zone the relaxation area from the thoroughfares or dining, cooking and study areas. If the back of your sofa isn't much to look at, hide it behind a low console table topped with decorative objects.

A good rug can also help to zone a living space, making it feel more intimate. Place the front legs of sofas and chairs on the rug, leaving the back legs off, to give mismatched furniture a more unified feel.

If your living room is your main TV room, it goes without saying that seating needs to be positioned to give a good view of the television, and that it isn't so far away that viewers need to squint. Living rooms without a TV give you the freedom to choose a more aesthetically pleasing focal point, whether it's a period fireplace, an ornate mirror or a statement coffee table.

If you do have a TV but don't want it on show when you're not watching it, you can always hide it away behind the doors of an attractive TV cabinet.

Living room storage ideas

Good living room storage is almost as important as a good living room layout. Clutter can build up quickly in a space that's used by the whole household every day, so it's important that everything has its right place.

A coffee table with drawers or a hidden shelf is perfect for keeping remote controls within reach but out of sight. Footstools that open up to reveal a secret storage compartment are another neat tidying trick, especially in small living rooms. Open shelving is great for books and ornaments, but it's useful to have some kind of drawer or cupboard storage in your living room as well, where you can tuck away things like laptops and other items that you don't want on display. Remember to leave plenty of room for any furniture with doors or drawers to open properly.

What are the new colours for living rooms?

For the biggest colours in living rooms in 2021, check out our pink living room ideas and green living room ideas.

That said, you can never go wrong with a muted base, which is why our grey living room ideas and neutral living room ideas will always be relevant.

What's the best way to light a living room?

Living rooms are multifunctional spaces, so they need lighting for all the different tasks they need to perform. First, you'll need a general light source – a ceiling pendant light, for example – that will light the room at darker times of day when the household are milling about.

Wall lights and table lamps will give a softer glow when it's time to relax. An adjustable reading lamp next to a comfy chair will allow readers to focus on their book without dazzling the rest of the room.

A formal, parlour-style living room demands decorative lighting to impress, whether it's a statement standard lamp or a designer chandelier. You might also consider adding accent lighting, such as a picture light to draw attention to a favourite work of art.

It's a good idea to have at least two electrical circuits for your living room lighting – one for the main light, and one for softer lighting – as well as dimmer switches so you can control the level of light to suit the time of day, task and mood.
